All over the world hair loss in men and women whether It is due to genetic reasons, stress, bad haircare or any medical condition, represent an aesthetic and social problem since time. Historically the scientific community has focused in finding new techniques to fight this unpleasant condition. In the last years Platelet-rich-plasma (or PRP) is showing interesting results in naturally reversing hair loss.
PRP (also known as Platelet-rich-plasma) therapy is an office-based, conservative, non-surgical solution, already used in various fields of medicine (sports medicine and orthopedics, hand surgery, oral surgery, neurosurgery) with positive outcomes and success. In plastic and aesthetic medicine is nowadays used to reduce lines, wrinkles, unpleasant and acne scars with good results.
Especially people experiencing a lot of miniaturized hair, who are not interested in surgery and have thinning hair, those with androgenic alopecia, hair loss at the top of the scalp or around the temples will benefit from it.
The innovative non-surgical procedure of PRP-therapy involves drawing out one’s own blood (around 10 cc), centrifuging and processing it with a special device so that the plasma with platelets only collects in a syringe. This plasma rich in platelets and growth factors is very useful in tissue regeneration and healing, promoting rapid angiogenesis and localized cell growth, regulating the cycle of hair bulbs and promoting hair follicles reconstitution. It’s then injected with really fine needles in the scalp under local small injections of anesthetic s which prevent any pain.
The procedure as a whole takes 60 minutes.
The recovery from PRP therapy is typically uneventful, with the common pain killers (i.e. NSAIDs) taken only if needed. Local swelling is usually seen after 4-6 hours afther PRP injections and will resolve after 48 hrs. Patients can wash their hair immediately after the injections with a fast recovery from activities of daily living.
The treatment requires two sittings in 1 month and promotes not only hair growth but also strengthens hair follicles producing more robust hair growth. It’s a quite safe procedure, without any side-effects. Some patients chose to have PRP performed every 6 months as early data suggests regular or semiannual PRP treatments may be more effective as well.
Patients will soon see a fuzz of hair after the first few months rendering the existing thinning hair thicker by strengthening the hair follicles with an extremely natural looking end result. The result will continue to improve up to 1 year of treatment.
